This Honey Ginger Walnut Salmon recipe brings together the best of the Western and Eastern culinary world by employing traditional Chinese flavors (spices and ingredients) with Western culinary techniques. This recipe has a particular focus on the traditional Chinese concept of 药食同源, that is, the concept that food and medicine are not mutually exclusive. The glaze combines the sweetness of honey and the savory depth of scallion, ginger, and garlic. The crust draws inspiration from Western culinary techniques of creating a delicious crust with nuts, and in this case, walnuts. Served with Broccoli, this dish complements the protein and omega-3 fatty acids of the salmon with aromatic, traditional Asian flavors.

This recipe is specifically curated to provide a rich supply of omega-3 fatty acids through the salmon which provides EPA and DHA and the walnuts which provide ALA. The combination of fats and proteins from these two ingredients not only make this recipe excellent for muscle recovery but ensures that keeps you satiated for a longer period of time between meals. Poached/Steamed broccolis on the same provide the necessary fiber and vitamins every meal requires and the additional includions of traditional Chinese flavors in ginger, garlic and scallions allow the whole dish to develop richer flavors while harnessing some of their antioxidative properties. I chose this recipe specifically because it connects to the Chinese culinary use of ginger, garlic and scallions I grew up eating. By combining these tradition Asian flavors with Western ingredients and Western culinary techniques, I got to develop a stronger appreciation for food in how it could bridge cultures while it being nutritionally valuable at the same time.
