🥛 Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt, being a dairy product, is a complete source of protein, meaning that it contains all 9 essential amino acids the human body requires as they cannot be synthesized by the body. Additionally, Greek yogurt is especially rich in protein, which supports muscle maintenance, building, and recovery. Greek yogurt also contains beneficial probiotic cultures and micronutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium, and phosphorus, which support different functions in the human body.
🍯 Honey: Honey is a natural sweetener derived from bees and is an excellent source of quickly-digested carbohydrates. Besides efficiently supporting energy levels pre-workout or post-workout, honey contains multiple natural flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which are known to combat Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress and chronic exposure to free radicals are known to be problematic for cellular functions and can cause chronic diseases over the long term.
🌾 Oats: Rolled oats or other types of oats are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and soluble fiber beta-glucan, which is known for its cholesterol-lowering abilities and maintenance of gut health. Additionally, oats also provide various micronutrients, including magnesium, iron, and zinc, to support various cellular functions.
🥛 Milk: Milk, or as many prefer to call it, the White Gold, is a blend of milk proteins, fats, and micronutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, and B vitamins that support overall health. The milk proteins contribute to muscle maintenance and immune system function, as well as cardiovascular health.
🌱 Chia Seed: Chia seed contains an ample supply of fiber and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. It promotes heart health, manages cholesterol, and reduces blood pressure.
🫐 Blueberry: Blueberry is a natural antioxidant powerhouse, containing anthocyanins, which are the pigment responsible for blueberries' blue color. Anthocyanins and vitamin C in blueberries are antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals to prevent cell damage.
🥜 Walnut: Walnut contains polyunsaturated, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, magnesium, and other essential nutrients to support healthy cardiovascular function while combating chronic inflammation.
Greek yogurt and milk create a stable base of satisfying protein to work with, ensuring that the first meal of the day satiates you and provides you with a good amount of protein to help you reach your protein goals. Nuts and seeds in the recipe help provide fiber, fatty acids, and antioxidants which complements the protein and carbohydrates in the oats to create an allround meal with different nutrients. Fats from nuts and seeds and proteins from Greek yogurt and milk are known to help with satiety, while carbohydrates inherently help provide readily-usable energy to help start your day. I chose this recipe because a lot of people because of the morning hassle chooses to skil breakfast out of convenience. To avoid gaps in nutrition and prevent excessive hunger, this simple, pre-made, but still nutritious recipe demonstrates that a practical and healthy meal does not always require a lot of preparation and fancy ingredients.
