Bagel & Lox is the quintessential New York City classic when it comes to a quick but hearty grab-and-go meal. Here, we skip the arduous task of making a bagel but preserve the good old combination of cream cheese & smoked salmon, layered deliciously over a crisp and golden slice of toast. Cream cheese & Lox seems simple, but it does not skimp on the nutrition. Vitamins A and calcium from the Cream cheese and Omega-3 fatty acids from the smoked salmon, paired with a slice of whole grain toast, deliver what is neccessary to start a productive day!
1 slice of whole grain toast
2-3 tsp of cream cheese (all variations depending on preferences)
3-4 slices of smoked salmon
Other optional garnishes (onions, cucumbers, etc)
Toast your slice of whole-grain toast until crisp and golden brown
Using a butter knife, spread the cream cheese evenly on the bread
3. Slice by slice, layer the slices of smoked salmons on the slice of bread
4. Enjoy!
🐟Smoked Salmon: A serving of smoked salmon provides a healthy supply of protein (~20g) and Omega-3 fatty acids (~500mg), namely EPA & DHA, shown to reduce inflammation, enhance cognition, and improve cardiovascular health. EPA & DHA are essential as they are not naturally synthesized by our body. Other important vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D and selenium, are for bone health and antioxidative effects, respectively.
🧀Cream Cheese: A source of dairy, cream cheese provides plenty of calcium and vitamin A to support bone integrity and immune system health, respectively. Additionally, naturally occurring milk fat helps with energy production and satiety.
🥯Whole Grain Toast: One slice of whole-grain toast provides ~3-4 grams of fiber to support digestion, and allows for slow and steady release of glucose (energy production).
🌿Generally, herbs and garnishes such as parsley, dill, and alike, are nutritional powerhouses, aiding in digestion, immunity, and helping with detoxification.
